Clark released a little fishing line, playing the lure out over the Merced as the chilly water rushed around his legs. “See? Gentle wrist action.”

“Like a brush stroke.” Olivia struggled with her pole. “Only heavier. And longer.” She cast a second time, almost hooking the tree branches behind her. “I’m going to need far more than one day to get the hang of this.”

Clark hadn’t known what he was going to say when he stumbled up the church aisle, but his legs had propelled him forward without asking permission. The last time he’d faced a congregation, he’d walked out in disgrace. Was this God’s way of finishing the job?

One day? He’d said the first words that poured from his heart. Was it wishful thinking or a divine message? Was God promising him an answer to his question by the end of the day?

Olivia’s large eyes and subtle nod had taken him equally by surprise. Maybe the message wasn’t even for him. Perhaps God was working in her heart and only using Clark as the messenger.

He glanced back at her standing in the rushing water, her trousers rolled over her knees. When had his heart started beating faster at the mere sight of this woman? “You’ll get it. It takes patience. Yosemite trout are smarter than the average fish. The streams are so rich, they don’t really need our flies. So you’ve got to wait them out.”

“Or they have to wait us out.” She stared down at her legs. “Look at me—I’m knee deep in your ‘river of mercy.’ ”

One step at a time. Clark flicked the line forward, sending the lure skimming over the surface of the water. A splash followed as a trout leaped in time.

“Oh!” she sputtered. “Did you get one?”

“Not yet. But it shows you they’re out there.”

Her expression steeled. “I’m going to get one.”

He couldn’t resist smiling at her determination. When she’d postponed leaving until tomorrow, he knew the last day in Yosemite had to be special. What could chase away the memories of what Vanderbilt had taken from her? He’d considered taking her to Nevada Fall or even hiking part way up Half Dome, but a quiet word had swept away all his plans. Give the day to God. See what He does.

If he couldn’t follow his own advice, what good was it? It didn’t matter where he took Olivia. This was between her and the good Lord.

And Jesus spent time fishing with His friends, didn’t He?

Clark balanced his way across the shifting rocks until he stood behind Olivia. Taking her wrist in his hand, he guided her arm back and forth, forcing himself to focus on the line and not the feel of her skin under his fingers. He’d been praying she would meet God in this place; unfortunately his thoughts weren’t as holy. The last thing she needed was him confusing the issue.

Besides, it was only one day.

She moved her feet, leaning into his arm. “I didn’t see you helping Marcus like this.
